New Way of Diagnosing Cancer!

I watched this video today and was inspired. Not just because Jack is only 15 and has made such an incredible break through, but because of how he describes his journey from "not knowing I had a pancreas" to "discovering a detection system for pancreatic cancer" through researching online.

Jack Andraka is a fifteen year old freshman in high school. He developed a paper sensor that could detect pancreatic, ovarian and lung cancer in five minutes for as little as 3 cents. He conducted his research at John Hopkins University. This research could change the face of cancer and promote early detection. He has been selected as the Intel 2012 ISEF winner and has won awards at multiple national and international math competitions. Wear it Pink Today! (26th October)

Today’s post is about an initiative by the Breast Cancer Campaign, called Wear it Pink. I am obviously a fan, not only because it is about extreme pinkness, but also because it is supporting such an amazing cause! Fighting for cancer research is a cause that is close to my heart as it has impacted many members of my own family and my friends and their families.

This month, my aunt was featured in a South African magazine (Sarie), who chose to tell her inspirational story of her fight against breast cancer. Her story is absolutely inspirational! It is in Afrikaans, so I can’t really share it on here, but if anyone would particularly like to read it, leave me a request in the comment box at the bottom of this page.

Stand Up to Cancer! (19th October)

Do you know someone who has been diagnosed with cancer? Or is currently undergoing treatment for cancer? Or has beaten it? Or perhaps, sadly, lost the battle? I do- too many! I think this is common now. You would be hard-pressed to find someone in the UK who has never met/known another person whose life has been affected by cancer. In my family, and my circle of friends, we have had too many encounters with cancer recently in my opinion. In the past 3 years we have lost two treasured members of our family (and some friends) and another member of our family is currently undergoing treatment and kicking cancer's butt! It is a sensitive topic for many- one close to most people's hearts and I have definitely begun to wonder why... I'm sure I am not the only one!
Cancer has become an epidemic, which is consistently growing and spreading across our nation and the world. You want to know the odds of someone getting cancer?- I was shocked!- then watch Stand Up To Cancer's campaign video.
On 19th October 2012, there is a national campain called Stand Up To Cancer. Many celebrities are joining forces with Channel 4 to host a TV special (much like Children in Need) to raise money and awareness of this dreadful disease! Get involved!! Watch the show, buy merchandise (available online or in Cancer Research charity shops) and/or, fundraiseand/or donate money- every tiny donation helps, so never feel that what you are giving will not make a difference!!- "If you think you are too small to make a difference , you have never spent the night with a mosquito!" (African Proverb).

The Breast Cancer Site: Free Clicks for Free Mammograms!

So this is pretty much the same principle as The Hunger Site free clicks, except that it supports Breast Cancer and giving free mammograms for disadvantaged women. Mammograms are an essential medical procedure that enables doctors to identify Breast Cancer before it has spread too far. Without this, many women die of breast cancer every year unnecessarily. 
'The Breast Cancer Site' is a charitable site that sells a whole host of items that donate to supporting breast cancer research and those affected by breast cancer. It also has a lot of excellent information on causes that need supporting and how we can help.
One of my favourite features (which I use every day that I log onto the internet using my laptop) is 'daily free clicks'. Basically, you visit The Breast Cancer Site and click on the 'Click Here to Give - it's FREE' button, which generates money for charity, paid for by site sponsors. When you click, these companies and groups actually pay for your click! That's 365 free chances each year to help! The Breast Cancer gives 100% of sponsor advertising fees to their charitable partners. The Breast Cancer Site has donated 57,890 mammograms since October 2000 (figure updated monthly)!
