Feed My Starving Children // A Hunger Free World

I am so personally taken with and inspired by 'Feed My Starving Children' that I have decided to post about them again! I have been searching through their site and found a letter from their Executive Director, Mark Crea, about insights into ending world hunger, which I thought I would share with you. Enjoy and be inspired!

Blessings!

Dear Friend of FMSC,
At Feed My Starving Children, we’ve challenged ourselves with a huge question:  If we eliminate malnutrition—completely—can families and whole communities become self-reliant? We think the answer is yes, and we’re proving it!
On the small island of Marinduque in the Philippines live 250,000 people—23,000 of them malnourished children. Efforts to solve this problem were disjoined: “The right hand didn’t know what the left hand was doing,” says the governor of Marinduque.
So, FMSC joined with a major partner, Risen Savior Missions, to marshal forces with the local Catholic Church, the Philippine government, and two other private charities. We’ve formed a united force to defeat hunger once and for all on this island. And we call it theMarinduque Integrated Nutrition Education and Livelihood project (MARINEL).
Our three-year plan: get food to the most vulnerable; teach and train people in sustainable activities like sanitation, hygiene, and farming; and slowly exit as the community becomes self-sufficient.
So far, our partners have identified all vulnerable people on Marinduque—children, pregnant and lactating mothers, the elderly, and those ill with tuberculosis. In response, FMSC has ramped up the number of feeding locations on the island from 55 to 164!
While we’re feeding people, our partnering organizations are busy laying the groundwork for livelihood projects. In this bold public-private venture, food is the start. It’s leveraged for development and ends with self-reliance—all within three years. And when our work is done on Marinduque, we’ll use this successful model in other communities as we strive for a hunger-free world!
Working side-by-side with us to reach our goal is Marinduque’s Catholic Bishop, Rey Evangelista. He says, “Seeing these hungry children, your heart will melt and you will be invited to help. But without deep concern and love, we’re just making plans, and setting statistics. Without love, we will not be successful.”
Yes, in Christ’s name, we aim to change more than statistics. We want to change lives. And with our matchless food, God has given FMSC powerful influence for change.
We know you are deeply concerned for God’s most vulnerable. But you also want your investment to improve conditions long-term. You can do both on Marinduque. Please give to “zero-out” malnutrition—while empowering people to thrive on their own.
Praying for Marinduque,

Mark Crea, Executive Director
P.S. Did you know 30% of the children on Marinduque suffer from severe protein deficiency?  Help us answer this need—while perfecting a better model for every country we serve!
“Only 2% of charities we rate have received at least 8 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Feed My Starving Children outperforms most other charities in America,” said a letter from Ken Berger, Charity Navigator’s President & CEO in early November. “This ‘exceptional’ designation differentiates FMSC from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.“

Give Up Your Calories

Give Up Your Calories is an initiative by Action Against Hunger to try to restore the world's food balance. The idea is simple (and requires no dieting on your part!). Take a photo of your food and give your calories to those who need them most. The Give Your Calories app uses image recognition and barcode-scanning software to recognize your snack. It displays a preset donation amount based on its calories (100 calories = $1), which can then be donated via PayPal.

There are 3 simple steps:

1) Download the iTunes app: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/giveyourcalories/id598880646?ls=1&mt=8

2) Order/buy/make any food you fancy and take a photo of your food using the app

3) The app calculates the number of calories in your food and gives you the option to donate via PayPal (every 100 calories = $1)

Simple!

Apologies to those of you (like myself) who do not yet own an iPhone, but this app does not seem to be on the Android market yet.

Help restore the world food balance by donating money for (at least some of) the calories you eat!

Blessings!

Investing in education for women is the best way to empower them to live better and raise healthier families.

President Obama has made combating world hunger one of his many goals during his administration. In order to do this, he must come up with innovative and extraordinary tactics to accomplish this lofty goal.
Empowering women with education and resources is one of the most effective ways to ensure that more children are being cared for properly and more mouths are being fed. Since it is common in many societies for women to be the caretakers of the children and the household, we need to provide them with the knowledge and education that will allow them to pursue better opportunities for themselves and their families.
Sign the petition asking President Obama to take a step toward eradicating world hunger by empowering women worldwide with better education and resources for life.

Oxfam: Enough Food for Everyone IF…

1 in 8 people go to bed with the pain of hunger. It's a scandal. We can be the generation to end global hunger IF we make our politicians pay attention and Oxfam aims to make this happen!
Sign up to the campaign and you can help the world's poorest people have enough to eat by persuading your MP to act.
After you sign up you'll have the option to email your MP and ask them to raise the issues of aid and tax with the Chancellor George Osbourne ahead of the UK budget.
Let's make 20 March - UK Budget Day - the day that delivers aid to help the poorest families feed themselves and highlights the tax dodging that keeps millions of people hungry.
We have the power to help end the global hunger crisis IF we act today.

Everyone can have enough food IF world leaders act now and we can make it happen!
This year, many of the world’s most powerful leaders will meet in the UK. They must change the future for millions of people who live with the day to day struggle against hunger. But that will only happen IF we get together and make them act.
So sign the petition now to take a stand on this issue.
Blessings!

Sign a Hungersite petition: empower women to eradicate world hunger

Today, I am asking you to help empower women to eradicate world hunger! Charity can be challenging.. people don’t always want a handout and sometimes handouts are not effective in the long term. That is why, in my opinion, it makes a greater impact when you empower people to do what is needed to solve a problem, rather than doing to them what you think they might need.

So I am directing you to a way to help make this happen: signing an online petition by the Hunger Site.

The Hunger Site: Free Clicks for Free Food!

**Remember Sainsbury’s Million Meal Appeal today and tomorrow** (http://365days2changetheworld.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/fareshare-sainsbury-meal-appeal.html)

In the past few years I stumbled upon a fantastic site called ‘The Hunger Site’. It is a charitable site that sells a whole host of items that donate to good causes. It also has a lot of excellent information on causes that need supporting and how we can help.

One of my favourite features (which I use every day that I log onto the internet using my laptop) is ‘daily free clicks’. Basically, you visit http://www.thehungersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=1 and click on the ‘Click Here to Give - it's FREE’ button, which generates money for charity, paid for by site sponsors. When you click, these companies and groups actually pay for your click! That's 365 free chances each year to help!Hungersite gives 100% of sponsor advertising fees to their charitable partners. The Hunger Site has given over 846,104,458 cups of food since June 1999 (figure updated monthly).
I have added a bookmark called ‘click’ to my bookmark bar at the top of my web browser to help me remember. Other suggestions would be to set www.hungersite.com as your home page, or to sign up for a free click reminder email (under the big ‘Click Here to Give - it's FREE’ button). You control how often you get a reminder! Bonus: if you are a new registrant to the GreaterGood Network (owners and operators of The Hunger Site), they will make an extra donation to the cause when you sign up.

Over the next few days, I will be promoting the different ‘Click Here to Give - it's FREE’ buttons for the hunger site to increase the chances of people finding this amazing site! For those of you reading regularly, I apologise for the repetition!

Thank you click sponsors!
Blessings!

Free Rice: Play online for rice to feed the poor!

This has got to be one of the most distracting (yet conflicting) sites ever! You get distracted because you are so into answering the quizzes.. then you feel bad because you are not working.. and then you remember you are actually feeding the hungry by donating rice! So conflicting (just ask @m_ager!). Go to http://freerice.com/#/english-vocabulary/1387
to have a go!
How it works is, you basically go to the site and start answering questions. Each question you get right, you earn 10 grains of rice to donate to the World Food Programme to help end hunger! (don't worry, rice does not get taken away from starving kids if you get a question wrong!). Now that does not seem like a lot of rice, but it soon starts adding up as you get more and more addicted to the quizzes!
The home page takes you to the 'English Vocabulary' quizzes, but there are more subjects to choose from! If you go to: http://freerice.com/category
you can choose from the following categories:
HUMANITIES
-Famous Paintings
-Literature
-World Hunger
MATH
-Multiplication Table
-Basic Math (Pre-Algebra)
LANGUAGE LEARNING
-German
-Spanish
-French
-Italian
SCIENCES
-Human Anatomy
ENGLISH
-English Vocabulary
-English Grammar
CHEMISTRY
-Chemical Symbols (Full List)
-Chemical Symbols (Basic)
GEOGRAPHY
-World Landmarks
-Identify Countries on the Map
-World Capitals
-Flags of the world
(there is also a section for American SAT questions: http://freerice.com/#/sat/1521289)
This is an amazing site for teachers to use as a time filler in class too (I know the upper primary and the secondary sections of my school use this site).
Enjoy the fulfilling and meaningful distraction!
Blessings!
