Smoking kills about 80,000 people in England every year! That’s almost enough people to fill Wembley Stadium!
Smoking also affects others around you:
§ 90% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking and as I mentioned previously, 80,000 people die annually in England from smoking-related causes. Think how many loved ones that means have to grieve unnecessarily every year??
§ Smoking also affects other people’s health (most often the people who are actually closest to the smokers). This is because of secondhand smoke. Whenever you light up, secondhand smoke is produced. This is the smoke exhaled by you, plus the smoke created by the lit end of a cigarette. Secondhand smoke is made up of gases and microscopic particles. This isn't just unpleasant, it can be a killer. Over 80% of secondhand smoke is invisible and odourless. The only way to protect others from the harms of secondhand smoke is to have a completely smokefree home and car.
During October, thousands of people across England are taking part in Stoptober - a new, exciting 28 day challenge to stop smoking. Watch the Stoptober challenge video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koE2fJ4V41U&feature=player_embedded .
