World Food Day: October 16, 2013
Every year 2.3 million children under age five die from causes related to malnutrition—and it simply
doesn’t have to be. In 1979 the United Nations declared October 16th World Food Day to strengthen
national and international solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, and to
draw attention to achievements in food security and agricultural development. The day has been
celebrated every year since 1981.
How We Take Action
From rural mountain villages to the confines of refugee camps to ethnically divided cities, Action Against
Hunger treats and prevents malnutrition in more than 40 countries around the world. Our programs are
launched most often during times of crisis and focus on the most vulnerable, including young children and
